Welcome to the Athenaeum of Ohio

Welcome to The Athenaeum of Ohio, home of the third oldest Catholic Seminary in the United States. As chancellor of the Athenaeum, and chairman of its board of trustees, I am very proud of this institution which celebrated its 180th year in 2009. The Athenaeum and its three divisions provide the archdiocese with a blessing only a few other dioceses enjoy -- a local institution dedicated to the effective formation of priests, deacons and lay ministers.

Mount St. Mary’s Seminary of the West, the Athenaeum’s oldest division, prepares men for ordination as Roman Catholic priests. The seminary program has two primary components: spiritual formation and ministerial education. Priests ordained following formation at Mount St. Marys Seminary serve not only the Archdiocese of Cincinnati but other dioceses throughout the United States and throughout the world.

Lay Pastoral Ministry Program, (LPMP) another division, prepares women and men to serve the Church and our communities as lay ministers. Since its inception in 1975 as one of the first such programs in United States, more than 600 graduates have contributed to the mission of the Church by actively serving in parishes, schools, social service agencies and in other lay ministry vocations.

The Special Studies Program, offers more specialized opportunities of study, including the Deacon Formation Program as well as continuing education programs for those in ministry.

I invite you to explore The Athenaeum of Ohio Website. Come and discover the Athenaeum of Ohio. Pray with us, learn with us, grow in wisdom and grace with us.

A Word of Thanks for 6616 Beechmont Avenue

6616 Beechmont Ave. has been an important address in my life for a long time: When I was in high school, when I taught Latin, Greek, and theology there, when I served as seminary rector, when I was a board member of the Athenaeum for 30 years or so. It still is a dear address for me. I am grateful for all the years I spent in various capacities in connection with 6616. It has been a blessing for me and for many others. Thanks be to God for the many gifts that have come to so many people at 6616 Beechmont Avenue!

Greetings from

Reverend Edward P. Smith,

Rector - President

One of the great joys I have as the president and rector of The Athenaeum of Ohio/Mount St. Mary Seminary is to welcome people to our community. And there are many reasons to be joyful. The quality education we offer, the mission of the Church which we espouse, and the faith we share as we prepare the priests, deacons and lay ministers for a new generation make this a wonderful place of formation.

We have much to show you here. This is one of the oldest seminaries in the United States, with a very fine academic and pastoral program. Besides priestly formation and graduate degree programs, we offer an exceptional course of studies in lay pastoral ministry, as well as a well respected program of preparation for the permanent diaconate. In all this, we are a united school, respecting the uniqueness of each division while working together for the good of the whole Church.

As you explore this website, I hope you see what an excellent institution this is, as well as some of the many opportunities that are offered to our students. In the end, though, nothing substitutes for an on-site visit, and you would certainly be a welcome guest.

Thank you for visiting our website. Experience our Athenaeum/Seminary, as many others have. I think you will find that it has something wonderful to offer you!
