Legacy Campaign Legacy Campaign Closed January 9, 2005 The status of the Athenaeum of Ohio/Mount St. Mary’s Seminary as one of the leading theological and ministerial institutions in the United States hinges on the success of an ambitious $18.75 million capital campaign designed to provide financial security for the school into the next decade. To maintain its niche in the national theater of theological education, an array of vital needs are identified in the Legacy Campaign. Among them are bricks and mortar projects, advanced educational components, and critical endowment needs to provide long-term financial support for the school. Bricks and mortar needs: * Windows – 780 windows, originally installed in the three-story granite stone building erected in 1929, need to be replaced at a cost of $1.5 million.
* Library Expansion – Public use of the Eugene H. Maly Memorial Library has significantly increased because it houses one of the best theological collections in the Midwest. The library is heavily used by clergy and members of all faiths. Library expansion is necessary to maintain the ever-growing collection and second floor space is available. Renovation and expansion cost is $2.75 million.
* Air-Conditioning – While the architecturally recognized Romanesque building housing the Athenaeum is an impressive landmark, it has not been fully air conditioned. This will provide space for additional public programs, lectures and concerts. Completing the project will permit year round building utilization and will cost $800,000. Advanced educational needs: * Library upgrades – There are several additional needs to complement the Eugene H. Maly Library expansion project. These needs include upgrading of collection maintenance and preservation methods. A unique collection of rare books and one-of-a-kind manuscripts, some dating to the 13th Century, must be better protected. Funding for these library needs will cost $500,000. * Distance learning – Because the Athenaeum serves all of southwest Ohio and much of west central Ohio, there is a pressing need to provide opportunities to areas far removed from the central campus. Presently, all Master’s degree study must be completed at the Cincinnati campus. Implementation of distance learning technology will provide easier access to students in all parts of the service area at a cost of $350,000. Endowment needs: Many advanced educational needs will be funded through endowments. Critical components of the campaign to be thereby funded are: * Technological improvements – Because of budget constraints, the Athenaeum has been unable to maintain cutting edge technology – a prerequisite for any graduate school offering numerous advanced degrees. An endowment of $500,000 will produce an annual income to keep the Athenaeum technologically secure for many years. * Holy Land Studies – Seminarians in formation and training to be future priests serving several Midwestern dioceses would reap obvious benefits through an opportunity to visit the Holy Land as part of their academic curriculum. All seminarians would be afforded this opportunity through the funding of a $1 million endowment. * Endowed Professorships -- Two professorships, funded at $1 million each, will attract and retain highly qualified academics in key disciplines. * Endowed Visiting Professorship – Endowed funds of $1 million will permit scholars in specific disciplines to teach at the Athenaeum for as long as a year, or as little as a quarter. This will enhance the faculty and bring outstanding scholars to the Cincinnati area. The Athenaeum of Ohio has long held a position as one of Cincinnati’s key assets not only for Catholics but for all religious denominations. Many of its degree courses are available to all faiths. The school offers myriad public forums, concerts, lectures and meetings. Its position is well deserved and its reputation well respected not only in Cincinnati and the Midwest, but throughout the United States and the world. Success of the Legacy Campaign will ensure the school will maintain its position as one of the nation’s most prestigious institutions of theological and ministerial education and a great resource to all of Greater Cincinnati and Southwestern Ohio.
