PH111    Medieval Philosophy     

A survey of Western philosophical thought in the Middle Ages: St. Augustine; Boethius; the monasteries, sources of light in “the Dark Ages” following the collapse of the Roman Empire; the gradual revival of centers of learning and the issue of universals; the recovery of Aristotle’s works, and the contributions of Islamic and Jewish thinkers; the founding of the European universities and “the greatest of centuries”: St. Bonaventure, St. Thomas Aquinas, Duns Scotus; winds of change in the 14th century: Ockham and the via moderna. (6 Undergraduate Credits)
